Connecting global and local communities with the arts in Christchurch

The Zeiser Room loft apartment above XCHC is for visiting creatives within our networks and adventurous visitors that are keen to experience the creative scene in our city. The upstairs apartment includes a private bedroom with en-suite, full kitchen and lounge area with desk-space.  Ask us about special rates if you are collaborating with our residents, keen to use the production space yourself, or hosting an event or exhibition in our showcase space.

THE SPACE

The Zeiser Room, named for the first artist to exhibit there, is quiet and private.  The bedroom has a comfortable queen bed and full bathroom . The upstairs lounge area has plenty of natural light and includes a corner workspace and full kitchen.

AMENITITES

In addition to featuring works by resident artists, we feature local products wherever possible.  We include a welcome pack from Ethique (a local company making solid beauty bars) and paper products by Innocent Packaging (a sustainable packaging company).

Other amenities include fibre wifi. Washer, dryer, ironing board.  Large desk/workspace.  Essentials provided (towels, sheets, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, conditioner, bodywash). Air conditioning, heating.  A bike with lock and helmet available for use.

SOME THINGS TO NOTE...

Guests have full use of the apartment and have a private entry separate from the venue below.  There is no access to the downstairs gallery and cafe once it is closed for the night.  The bedroom and bathroom are private, but the kitchen is occasionally used by the downstairs cafe for some baking.  This means that you may meet our friendly cafe staff!

Strictly no smoking to save you a (very expensive) visit from the fire service.

Check-out is 10am and check-in is from 6pm, but you can store your luggage anytime.  Three weeks maximum stay.

GETTING AROUND

The loft is within half hour walking distance to many amenities.  The bus is convenient to the central city and many suburbs. We have two free bikes available for use, and Christchurch has a great metro bike share.  There is one private car-park behind the building and free parking on the street.. The airport shuttle is quick and affordable.

The Cost

XCHC is a for purpose business, and the purpose is to cultivate a creative ecology and support the development of creative practices/activities in the city. We sustain this by charging where/when there are available resources, and offering it for creative purposes when there is not.

We usually have a chat about what you can pay and how else you might contribute to XCHC if not financially. We’ve hosted emerging artists who couldn’t afford anything, and established artists from all over the world who had funding for their residencies, so it’s a balance; more of finding what works for us both (and we have this conversation all the time)

Every artists circumstances are different, and XCHC exists to support them by adapting and balancing our income with providing a level of support. We hope this makes sense.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The heart of the CBD is within 30 minutes walking distance, but if you’d like to venture farther or faster we have bikes on-site.

We’re in between the suburbs of Sydenham and Woolston.  Sydenham is a short walk to the west and features smaller galleries as well as The Colombo for shopping and entertainment.  To the east, Woolston is the home of craft beer breweries, and the Tannery - a Victorian arcade with shops, live music, an arts cinema, and yoga studio.

Buses to the beach suburb of Sumner or the port town of Lyttelton leave every 15 minutes and take only a half hour.

We are usually on site (but always available by phone) and happy to provide recommendations about food, drinks, and arts in Christchurch.  Ask us about things to do in the region, within an hour you can be in native bush, deserted beaches, or wine country. We look forward to meeting you.
